5 Types of Witches

There are so many different types of witches who practice a multitude of different crafts. From light witches and dark witches to gray witches and weather witches, witchcraft is truly something that is deeply personal and unique to those who follow the path. In this brief article, we will be shedding a little light on some common types of witches, some of their preferences into the realm of their craft, and what makes them so very special.

Traditional Witch

Traditional witches have strong connections to the history of witchcraft and the Old Craft prior to Wicca. They practice witchcraft in a historical (traditional) manner, frequently studying their ancestors or other witchcraft legends. Traditional witches keep the “traditional” ways of practicing their art alive. They frequently deal with the local history and spirits of where they are or have come from. There are undoubtedly current traditional witches practicing now, however these witches hold old history and practices in high regard. Traditional witches also often tend to be solitary witches, however may do choose to work with a coven providing they can find like minded individuals.

Eclectic Witch

An eclectic witch does not adhere to a single religion, practice, tradition, or culture. Their practice is influenced by a variety of sources before becoming the witch’s own. They may worship a higher power, or their practices may be purely secular, or they may be spiritual in their own right. With their practice, an eclectic witch eventually creates their own “rules”—it is absolutely unique to the witch. Eclectic witches truly are a more new breed, they roll with the punches and do not adhere to any set of standards. Their practice is uniquely their own, as it should be with regard to any practice of witchcraft.

Hedge Witch

A hedge witch engages in “hedge jumping,” which entails leaving this world and entering the Otherworld. Hedge witches have the ability to contact the spiritual realm and pass messages between them. Hedge witches deal with plants and Earth magic in addition to astral projection. It’s their capacity to traverse the “hedge,” or the divide between this world and the spirit world, that distinguishes them as a hedge witch. The “flying on a broomstick” narrative is supposed to be a misinterpretation of hedge witches “flying” into the spiritual realm. Hedge witches are very keen on healing practices involving herbs and medicinal aspects and are quite knowledgeable with regard to this sort of practice. It comes easy to them whereby herbalism can be quite tricky for others to try and ascertain.

Kitchen Witch

Also known as a hearth witch or a home witch, kitchen witches work their magick mostly in their homes or in the kitchen. They are mostly domestic, loving, and like making their house a genuinely wonderful and sacred atmosphere. Kitchen witches enjoy cooking, brewing, and using herbs, which they often acquire from their own gardens. They produce spells, rituals, and magic by combining their own personal and individual magical energy with essential oils, plants, food, and ordinary objects. Many witches have found their path in the kitchen, which truly is of no great surprise why so many find a sense of warmth and comfort from within their home as opposed to being outside and becoming one with nature.

Solitary Witch

A solitary witch might be any sort of witch, however they prefer to practice alone instead of in a coven. This could be through choice or because they have yet to form a working group. The term solitary is far more than simply “being alone” with their practice. It’s believed that solitary witches are reincarnations of witches who’ve been practicing for generations and whose knowledge is awakened at puberty. They do not require a coven as much as a newer witch because they recall and understand the craft. Solitary witches have very strong ties to their ancestors. The spirit world is of no surprise to them. They find a sense of calming peace and comfort around spirits. And they are apt to lean on their ancestors for answers to their questions.

Your Walk is Yours Alone

As previously stated, witchcraft is a deeply personal path for those who choose to walk it. Whether you are new to the craft or have been rooted in it for generations, the practice of witchcraft is unique and beautiful. It is important to remember that this walk is your own, and that you must always find your own way. Don’t ever let anyone categorize who you are and what you choose to believe. Regardless of the journey you are on, you can find a haven in the magickal realm of the craft.
